Cut 4a Cure

This is for the child who wakes up in the morning forced to deal with the reality that they're going to spend their day in the hospital going through chemotherapy treatments!

This is for the wife and mother of 3 children who goes into the doctor after she's feeling pain in her stomach and is told she has 3 weeks to live because the doctors have found a malignant tumor!

This is for the elder man living alone, who is told by his doctor that what he felt in the back of his shoulder is a tumor and it may or may not be malignant.

This is for you, this is for me, and this is for everyone that we know (and even that we don't know) that has to deal with the reality of suffering from the effects of cancer! It could be someone you've known your entire life or a sad story like the ones that you've read above (all of which are real). According to statistics gathered from the Canadian Cancer Society based on current incident rates 40% of Canadian women and 45% of Canadian men will develop cancer in their lifetime. That means, chances are, you or someone that you are close to, will be diagnosed with cancer.

Where do I come into this?

I'm currently a member of the Gatineau Olympiques which is a team in the QMJHL in the Canadian Hockey League. This gives me the opportunity to be viewed by many people, especially throughout the eastern part of Canada. There are many fans in Quebec and the Maritimes that follow the QMJHL and it is my hope that all fans of the QMJHL, CHL and hockey can hear about this initiative and that ALL people who follow this become a part of it in some way. I've thought of many ways to help out people in need but this idea was intriguing because some hockey players in the past have grown their hair to donate and so it made me want to do the same thing. So I've decided to grow my hair the entire season (I started growing it on June 1st 2009). My hair is naturally curly so it may not look as long as it but at the current moment it's probably somewhere between 4-5 inches. My initial goal was to grow my hair the entire season to donate it to the Locks of Love Foundation. Locks of Love is a foundation that people donate their hair to and this organization makes wigs with the hair and gives the wigs to children who have lost their hair due to chemotherapy treatments. I decided that while I was growing my hair, I mine as well see if people will help donate to my cause. In doing so, I have the opportunity to go public with my initiative. I am hoping that I can reach as many people as possible with my efforts. I am also hoping that many people will donate because Cancer is something that can happen to any of us and it can alter a persons' life from the moment that they found out that they have Cancer.

Like many other junior teams, my Gatineau Olympique teammates and I will all die our hair blond for our annual playoff run. What this means is I have to have a cut date for my hair. The day I have chosen is February 12th 2010. On this day the Gatineau Olympiques face the Rouyn-Nouranda Huskies in Gatineau. I and several other members of my team will be dawning completely shaved heads. This will be in support of all those children and people who lose their hair due to their battle with cancer. It is my intention to donate my hair to a foundation so that a wig can be made at that time. This also gives me enough time to grow a little bit of my hair back to die for playoffs. Which really isn't that important but the issue is that if I die my hair I can no longer donate it.

It is a minor sacrifice that I am withstanding compared to that of what many people that deal with cancer go through daily. But I hope that maybe you and I can both make a difference. I know I'm asking you to open your wallet a little bit, but let's face it 20 dollars won't kill anyone. It is not a far cry to make a donation to a fundraiser that you KNOW is going to make a real difference. That is my goal. To make sure that you, I and all those people who deal with cancer on a day to day basis have a better chance against their fight.

I encourage all members of the group to write a story, post a picture, post a video, or start a conversation in the discussion section to discuss anyone they know or love that has dealt with cancer and won, or unfortunately succumbed to this difficult struggle. For example if you have a friend or someone you know that is dealing with or has dealt with cancer feel free to post a picture of them so we can make the group a little bit more personal. I want everyone who donates to know that they're making a difference to someone important!

TO DONATE-

A link is attached in the website section of the group page; this link will direct you to my webpage on the Canadian Cancer Society website. This linked page will allow you to donate online directly to my fundraiser. In doing so you will also be given a tax receipt and the knowledge that you know that you made a difference in saving someone's life... Because you have!

I'm going to leave everyone with a story... I went to a funeral this past summer. The funeral was held for a young man by the name of Josh Olynyk. Josh had lost his battle with a rare and aggressive Cancer. Josh was 24 years old when he passed away. Although I had never formally met Josh, I knew his family so well that I felt as if I had known him for years. His sister Lauren and I are very close friends. She's only 19. I saw how difficult it was on Lauren and the Olynyk family to go through losing someone as incredible as Josh! Something that really hit close to home with me was when I went to the funeral. The funeral was held at St. Mary's church in the small town of Owen Sound, Ontario. When I pulled up to the church I saw a bunch of guys that seemed to be my age and they were dressed in only jeans and a t-shirt. I found it strange and maybe even kind of disrespectful to be anywhere near a church at this time dressed in that attire. Nonetheless, I went inside the church and took my seat. To my surprise, the same guys that I had seen in the parking lot area wearing a t-shirt and jeans were the same guys who walked up the aisle in procession following Josh's casket. Several of them were even carrying the casket I believe. Later on I found out that one of Josh's wishes were that his best friends would dress in only jeans and a t-shirt to his funeral. He also had wished for nobody to be sad about their loss that they were experiencing but that they would enjoy the time that they had with Josh. The young was as strong as they come and he was just a normal guy who would have a beer with his buddies after their hockey games. The fact that this young man dealt with so much pain and agony and he left this earth touching as many lives as he did, well, that really stuck with me. Seeing his friends at the funeral in their jeans and t-shirts and being there for Lauren through what she went through was one of the major reasons why I've decided to take the opportunity that I have been given as being in a position where I am prominent in a community to use it towards something that will make sure that you and I won't ever have to walk down one of our best friends funerals in a t-shirt and jeans. Rest in Peace Josh Olynyk June 15th 1985 – July 27th 2009.

Please donate and support 'Cut 4a Cure'.
